3. The History of Huddersfield Hockey Club


Huddersfield Hockey Club is one of the oldest clubs in Yorkshire. We currently run 4 senior Men’s Teams, 5 Junior Teams, 1 Veterans and 1 Vintage Team. The 4 Men’s Teams all play competitive hockey in various divisions within the Yorkshire League. The Youth, Veterans and Vintage Teams generally play a combination of Friendly & Tournament hockey throughout the season.

1900: Club formed. First match played at Greenhead park and first opponents were Halifax.

1902: The first President of the club, Colonel Freeman, provides a ground at Thornhill Road.

1903: The club moves to Lockwood Cricket Club

1905: The club moves to Armitage Bridge Cricket Club

1935: The club moves to Honley Cricket Club, initially for one season whilst Armitage Bridge is relaid, but Honley becomes a more permanent home.

1951: Club celebrates its Golden Jubilee

1960: Diamond Jubilee celebrated

1989: Men’s 1st XI moves to Keighley in order to play regularly on artificial surfaces.

1996: The club moves to its new and current venue at Lockwood Park thanks to HRUFC and the lottery.

2000: The club celebrates its centenary

2009: The club merges with Lockwood Park Dragons to become Huddersfield Dragons Hockey Club
