Dragons History 2 of 3

2. History of Lockwood Park Dragons Hockey Club

Lockwood Park Dragons can trace their origin to 1920 when Laund Hill Ladies Hockey Club was formed to represent the YMCA in Huddersfield. It comprised a group of women who played tennis in the summer and needed another sport to play in winter. As a nomadic club they played at various venues around Huddersfield including Deighton High School, Highfields, and King James’s School before moving to Waterloo and sharing the facilities at the former home of Huddersfield RUFC.

In 1996 HRUFC moved to new facilities at Lockwood Park, Laund Hill moved with them alongside Huddersfield HC and Dragons Ladies HC. Laund Hill then changed their name their name to Lockwood Park Ladies HC.

In 2004 Lockwood Park Ladies merged with Dragons ladies to form Lockwood Park Ladies HC, this was a full circle for some players as the Dragons were originally a team formed from former Laund Hill players.

In 2009 Lockwood Park Dragons Ladies HC merged with Huddersfield Hockey Club to form Huddersfield Dragons Hockey Club. This was significant for both clubs as throughout their lifespans both had been single sex, women's and men's respectively, and in merging became one of the largest hockey clubs in Yorkshire.
